2025 human study · Reflux and digestion

The formula went head to head with a prescription PPI. It scored better.

In a 2025 human study, researchers compared a traditional Chinese seven-herb formula with rabeprazole for eight weeks.

Fig. 1 The trial gave one group a seven-ingredient decoction twice daily and the other a single prescription capsule each morning.

Both groups improved. The herbal formula group finished with better heartburn, acid regurgitation, food regurgitation, and total reflux questionnaire scores.

The result was simple

The herbal group drank Xuanfu Daizhe Decoction twice a day. The other group took rabeprazole once a day.

After eight weeks, the herbal group finished with an average total reflux questionnaire score of 7.91. The rabeprazole group finished at 11.75. Lower was better, so the herbal formula group came out about 33% lower.

That is a final score about 33% lower in the herbal formula group.

The formula also scored better on heartburn, acid regurgitation, and food regurgitation. Both groups improved. Noncardiac chest pain was not significantly different.

There was one big problem

The studied formula used seven separate ingredients. The hospital pharmacy supplied them. They had to be boiled down into 400 mL of decoction, then taken in two daily servings.

Outside a hospital pharmacy, that means finding and paying for seven specialty ingredients, cooking a fresh decoction, and doing it again the next day.

Powerful tradition. Impractical routine.

Dr. Lyda made the tradition practical

Dr. Lyda Kermani, DACM, LAc, created Liao as a focused modern interpretation of Xuanfu Daizhe Tang.

She selected three core herbs that carry the traditional formula's central direction:

  • Inula Flower traditionally directs digestion downward.
  • Hematite traditionally anchors rising stomach energy.
  • Licorice Root traditionally supports the stomach and harmonizes the herbs.

Liao concentrates all three at a 10:1 ratio in one measured liquid.

A measured spoon of Liao being stirred into a glass of warm water in a kitchen
Fig. 3 One measured 2 mL spoon, stirred into warm water. No sourcing, no boiling.

No seven-herb shopping list. No daily boiling. No pot of bitter decoction.

Just one measured 2 mL spoon before breakfast and one before dinner, stirred into warm water.

Each bottle concentrates 2.6 pounds of raw herbs into 120 mL. It is doctor formulated, tested for purity, and made for real daily life.

The published study tested the complete seven-herb decoction. Liao is Dr. Lyda's focused three-herb interpretation at a 10:1 concentration. It is a different product and was not tested in that study.

This is not PPI versus Liao

Your PPI has a job. Liao has a different one. You do not have to choose.

A PPI reduces acid production. Liao is used to build strength in the digestive system, inspired by the traditional idea of helping digestion move in the right direction.

Used in the same routine, you keep the acid control you rely on while adding support for the digestive pattern underneath.

If you already take a PPI, keep taking it as directed. Add Liao alongside your existing routine and leave approximately 30 to 60 minutes between Liao and your medication.

The goal is not to fight the routine that helps you today. It is to give your digestion another kind of support at the same time.

Then we tested the complete Liao routine

Before launch, 30 people followed a 90-day protocol using Liao alongside the lifestyle guidance in Dr. Lyda Kermani's TCM Digestion Guide.

This was a small internal test, not a controlled clinical trial. Individual experiences vary.

And after the second month I started to notice that it just went away for good, which I was really shocked.

Chinese medicine does not treat heartburn. It treats your pattern.

Two people with the same burning can need opposite things. One is running hot. Another is cold and depleted, and the cooling advice everyone repeats makes it worse. A third is driven by stress and never really had a food problem at all.

In Chinese medicine that difference has a name. It is called your pattern, and working out which one you have is the first thing a practitioner does before recommending anything.

So we built the quiz that asks what a practitioner would ask. Eight questions, about a minute. What your reflux feels like, when it hits, and whether warmth makes it better or worse. Then the most Chinese medicine question of all: find a mirror, stick out your tongue, and match it to a picture. Practitioners have read tongues for two thousand years.

At the end you get:

  • Your pattern, named and explained in plain English.
  • What to eat and drink for that specific pattern, and what to ease off while it settles.
  • Where Liao fits into your routine.
  • 10% off your first order, applied to the link at the end.

Why the recommended plan is 90 days

Recurring discomfort is a pattern, not one isolated meal. In Chinese medicine, patterns are supported through consistency.

Liao's internal protocol ran for 90 days. One bottle covers 30 days. The 90-Day Plan gives you three bottles so you can live the complete routine and judge it honestly alongside the routine you already have.

The 90-Day Plan

  • 3 bottles
  • 10:1 concentrated liquid
  • About $1.17 a day
  • Free shipping
  • Total $104.91
  • Renews Every 90 days
  • Pause or cancel Anytime

The complete routine is 90 days. Your decision to begin is protected for the first 30 days by Liao's money-back guarantee.
